Wimbledon Embraces Video Challenge System in 2025.

Wimbledon court with video review system

The tournament joins the US and Aussie Opens in employing replay systems.

Video review technology will make its debut at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Competitors are granted the option to question particular decisions made by the official, mirroring the system currently in use at each of the American Grand Slam and the Australian Open.

This technology is slated for use on Centre Court and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club introduced electronic line calling, which effectively ended the longstanding tradition of line officials.

Scope of Challenges

Players will not be permitted to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but are allowed to ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • If a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball made contact with an opponent's racquet or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Notably, there will be no cap on the number of reviews a player can request.

Practical Application

An illustrative case occurred in Indian Wells last week, where a top player used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the official, but believed his rival had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was responsible for interference, awarding the rally to his opponent.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't new for major tournaments. The system was adopted at the US Open since 2023 and the Australian Open since 2025.

Additionally, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at every one of its events.

Other Changes

A further innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to complement the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where spectators have occasionally been unsure whether a ball was out or in.

Finally, with precisely 100 days to go until the beginning of the Championships, organizers have also announced an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifying competition in Roehampton.
